Moving is a daunting task. But there are ways to make your move more efficient & organized. The following guide would save you time and effort during and after moving.

Prepare the following prior to packing:

• Carton Boxes
• Markers
• Bubble Wrap
• Masking Tape
• Newspapers
• Scissors/cutters
• Measuring Tape

It is best to use strong boxes of medium size, or a size that is easy for you to move it around. Boxes should not exceed 20kg for mobility & safety. Try to combine heavy items with lighter items to balance out the weight & maximizing carton space. Placing heavy items first followed by lighter items on top. Make sure to secure box well at the bottom with strong tape so that contents will not spill out when moving. Special boxes can be purchased for clothing where you can pack your clothes that are on the hanger directly into the boxes, which makes it a breeze to pack & unpack. Boxes can be obtained through the moving company. Some would also provide them free of charge when you engage them for your move.

It is advisable to pack books & magazines in small boxes as they can be very heavy. Pack them tightly. To avoid musky smells, you can dust some talcum powder in-between the pages and wrap the books prior to packing. Leave for a couple of months to eliminate the musky smell.

If possible, pack audio/video equipment in their original boxes. If you do not have the original boxes, ask your moving company if they have a suitable box for the size of your audio/video equipment. If there are no boxes available, check with your moving company if they will provide protective wrapping for the equipment.

There are a few ways to label boxes. Choose one that you find most effective for you when unpacking. You can label each box by:

1. Room
2. Colour Stickers/Markers
3. Numbers
4. Or a combination of all the above

Remember to label boxes clearly when they contain fragile items. Protect such items with either bubble wrap, newspapers or towels. Use lots of paper or bubble wrap for glass wares so that it will buffer any impact from the move. Pack plates and glasses vertically and wrap them individually with paper.

It is easier to divide packing into rooms/areas, which would make it more manageable & less overwhelming. Start packing ahead of your designated moving date so you can stagger packing. Pack one room at a time.

Note which boxes should be moved first and let your movers know. Stack boxes according to their sizes so that they can be more efficiently carted into the lorry. This will save time and also enable boxes to be neatly stacked in the lorry to maximize space.

Pack liquids in leak-proof containers & label the boxes accordingly.

Last but not least, all valuables should travel with you. If you have treasured items like expensive art pieces or antiques, it is best to have them insured or check with your moving company if they have insurance covering these items.

A well planned move would ease your transition to your new home, making it a more pleasant experience.
